Chapter 13

Kiara

There have been few times in my life when I have woken up next to someone else feeling content and happy. I have very sensitive skin, and I get irritated easily when skin contact is maintained for too long.

But when I wake up the next morning with Archie’s arms draped over my stomach, there is a strange feeling of contentment mixed with confusion that immediately swarms me. It leaves me feeling hot and cold at the same time.

I turn my head to the side a little and come face-to-face with Archie’s sleeping face. I am struck by how gentle and peaceful his face is when he is sleeping. There is a small smile on his lips, as if he is having a good dream. I notice for the first time how long his lashes are and the way they flutter as his eyeballs move behind his closed eyelids.

His hand on my stomach is warm and stokes a fire that I recognize in my lower abdomen. I quickly redirect my thoughts. I have more pressing thoughts, and I can’t let myself be distracted.

What the hell were you thinking, Kiara? I ask myself.

The sudden urge to call my best friend and talk to them about my conflicting emotions and the realization that I have no one to call and vent to leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. My good mood is dampened, and I start to feel suffocated.

I gently lift the arm across my stomach and shimmy to the side to slide out without waking him up. When I am free, I get off the bed and search for my clothes. Then I remember that we took our clothes off downstairs before he carried me into his room. My gaze falls on a neatly folded shirt on the beanbag on the other side of the room, and I tiptoe over to it, careful not to run into anything that will make noise and wake Archie.

The shirt swallows my tiny frame. The sleeves are way longer than my arms, and the hem almost reaches my knees. I am enveloped by Archie’s scent, and I subconsciously inhale before I even realize what I am doing. He smells like lavender and mint. I shake my head to clear it out as thoughts from last night begin to fill it.

I turn to look at Archie, still sleeping peacefully and calmly on the bed, before I start tiptoeing to the door.

I am halfway to the door when I suddenly hear his voice.

“Where are you going?”

I freeze for a few seconds before I slowly turn around to look at him.

“Did I wake you? I’m sorry, I thought I was being quiet,” I reply instead, unsure about the answer to his question. Isn’t it pretty obvious that I am trying to sneak back to my room.

“Where are you going?” he asks again, his voice heavy with sleep. “Are you going to run again?”

I immediately clock that he is talking about the morning after we met at the club, when I snuck away before he woke up.
